The Conservative Media Brand That Grew Fast and Bled Faster
On paper, Newsmax looks like a growth story. Under the hood, a single type of legal expenses erased years of profit.

Today, I’m digging into Newsmax
Newsmax, the conservative-leaning news outlet, is one of the rare media companies that has grown revenue in recent years.
But, take a quick look at their operating margin below. It's terrible. The reason: they have had to settle two lengthy lawsuits about their claims of voter machine election interference (nearly $100M in total).
While their operating income has gotten crushed by these one-time settlements, their audience is large, their distribution is expanding, and their subscription + affiliate revenue is becoming meaningful.
Here are the key points from the report:
Revenue grew from $135M to $171M in 2024 and is pacing near $185M TTM.
A big shift is happening: subscriptions and affiliate fees now make up more than 30% of revenue.
Their on-air talent lineup appears quite strong, and according to some commentary out there, it’s driving negotiating leverage with distributors.
They’re using AI behind the scenes to tag content and mine a huge archive… but they don't appear to be seeing any headwinds from the AI-related content that's proliferating the internet.
One key business theme that I'm going to be talking about in the coming months and years is that I think there's an opportunity for almost all businesses to have a media arm, even if it's a small part-time effort. Adding value to your customers with content can solidify a long-term relationship with them.
And a prime example of that is this newsletter that you're reading right now!
With that, I will see you tomorrow.

The N.O.O.B. Nine — Competitive Powers
The Nerd Out on Business Nine is made up of Hamliton Helmer's famous "7 Powers" of competitive advantage (Scale Economies, Network Economies, Counter-Positioning, Switching Costs, Branding, Cornered Resource, and Process Power) combined with two of my own (Data Flywheel and Distribution Advantage).
Power | Score | Rationale |
|---|---|---|
Branding | 4/5 | Strong identity within its niche. |
Data Flywheel | 2/5 | Early stage first party data advantage. |
Process Power | 2/5 | Standard newsroom processes. |
Scale Economies | 3/5 | National channel spreads fixed costs but content is labor heavy. |
Switching Costs | 2/5 | Viewers switch easily despite distributor contracts. |
Cornered Resource | 2/5 | Limited proprietary IP. |
Network Economies | 2/5 | No true network effects beyond audience size. |
Counter-Positioning | 3/5 | Ideological angle incumbents cannot mirror. |
Distribution Advantage | 3/5 | Widespread carriage but negotiations are volatile. |
Average Score: 2.6/5 - Moderate moat, driven mostly by brand and distribution.
