Hurco’s CNC Edge: Controls First, Scale Later
With zero debt and a service annuity, Hurco has staying power. The problem is gross margin compression and operating losses that remind us why scale matters in capital equipment.
Today, I'm looking at Hurco Companies (HURC). It's a small-cap manufacturer of CNC machine tools. They design and sell machining centers, lathes, and proprietary controls, mainly for job shops and short-run manufacturers.
A few highlights from the report:
Product edge: Their conversational WinMax controls save operators time, which is why many stick with Hurco once trained.
Revenue mix: Machines drive ~80%, but service parts and fees now make up ~20% which a stabilizer in slow times.
Balance sheet: Net cash, no debt, which is rare in cyclical capital equipment.
Geographic tilt: Over half of sales are in Europe, so FX swings and regional demand shifts hit hard.
The bad news: Margins fell from ~25% in 2022 to ~20% today, and FY2024 slipped into an operating loss.
I like the niche nature of Hurco. And I think it's smart that they've implemented a debt-free strategy which helps them weather the cyclicality in their markets.
But in all reality, a company that's had approximately $10M of operating profit probably shouldn't be publicly traded. The cost of being public has probably been at least a couple million dollars/year, which historically is a pretty big deal for this small of a company.
