A few projects I'm working on

I wanted to send you an update on some other projects I'm working on and I'm interested if you'd enjoy seeing me talk more about my learnings and progress into this newsletter?

As many of you know, I founded Harvest Profit, a farm-management software company that helps farmers track finances and make sharper business decisions. John Deere acquired Harvest Profit in 2020, and I still support the team informally. With that context, here’s what I’m building next:

1. Nerd Out Note-Taking App

  • Problem: Existing tools like Obsidian and Reflect each have strengths, but none give me:

    • a friction-free daily note feed to allow for infinite scroll backward and forward in time, and

    • real-time collaboration with end-to-end encryption

  • Solution: I’m coding Nerd Out to deliver exactly that.

  • Status: Private beta should launch in 2-3 months.

2. Business-Themed 3D-Printed Games

  • I’ve fallen hard for 3D printing, and my five-year-old twins keep stealing my wallet while shouting, “We love money!”

  • My need for wanting to teach them the value of money plus my love of teaching business concepts sparked three board game concepts where most components are 3D printed.

  • Next step: Printing the first game now and refining the other two.

3. Home-Grown Accounting + Mini-ERP

  • Harvest Profit users long asked for a QuickBooks integration—an integration that never made full sense because typical accounting software lacks the data structure to make an integration smooth. If it did, there likely wouldn’t have been a need for

  • Gaps I see in today’s accounting tools:

    • Expensive multi-entity support

    • Rising subscription prices

    • A lack of accounting software being deeply integrated into other tools like a CRM, marketing automation, etc.

  • My build: Core accounting plus lightweight ERP modules (email marketing, inventory, project management) that I can dog-food in the 3D printing venture. I might keep this internal or I might not….we’ll see!

I plan to sprinkle updates on these projects into future Nerd Out on Business newsletters.
